Last night was FANTASTIC.

I went to a special session of ‘The Book Thief’, which was special because straight afterwards there was a Q&A session with the author himself, Markus Zusak. To end the night he did a book signing session.

i can’t even describe how it made me feel. There he was, one of my favourite - if not favourite - authors, sitting in front of me, talking about my favourite book of all time. He talked about his thoughts on how the movie turned out, and the inspiration behind writing the book. It was so interesting listening to all of his stories, not only as a huge fan, but as a writer myself.

While standing in line for the book-signing, a lady came around and asked us to write anything we wanted included on a post-it note. Most people just had their names. I was about to write my name before I remembered my favourite quote from the book, a quote that I had actually considered getting tattooed.

"I have hated the words, and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right."

By the time I got to him, his assistant took my book and read the post-it. She said it was a bit long, and after so many signings he might not be able (or want to) write it. She handed the book to him, and I apologised for the length, but he said it was no problem. I said the quote meant a lot to me, and even though his hand must have been sore, he wrote it for me. He was so lovely and friendly, though I only said a few words to him.

I still can’t find the words to express what his book means to me. I wish I had a way to express it to him (isn’t it a weird concept that somebody you’ve never met can change your life?), but I couldn’t. I don’t know if i ever could.

All I know is that I’m so glad I went last night. It really meant the world to me to meet him, and to talk to him if only for a few minutes. And now my favourite book is signed, and I just feel so grateful.

It was just really cool okay
